There’s no better place to relax, unwind and enjoy the warm weather than on the comfort of your deck. Unfortunately, it might not be in its best shape after being exposed to the harsh winter weather over the past few months. If you are looking to use it for your backyard parties or summer cookouts with friends or family, it needs to be revitalized both aesthetically and functionally.
Follow these four simple steps to get your deck ready for the summer months.
1. Clean your deck. Start by sweeping away organic debris that has accumulated over the past few months. Then, take your garden hose for a quick wash. If there are deep-seated stains or grime, use soapy water to scrub them off. If you have a pressure washer, use it so you can save time cleaning. Make sure it’s free of splinters, loose boards and exposed nails. Consider refinishing your hardwood deck with a sealer.
2. Create some shade. Expect an increase in outdoor temperatures over the next few months, so make sure your deck receives enough shade when the sun is up. Place a large canopy or an umbrella in the center of a table-and-chairs layout. Use fans, misters, and light-colored furniture to make the room feel cooler.
3. Add furniture and décor. Adding furniture will set the stage for how you use the area now that it’s empty. Sunning or poolside? Look into outdoor chaise lounges. Dining outside? Make sure your table and chairs are sturdy enough. Outdoor sofas are great for entertaining or relaxing.
4. Make it appealing in the evening hours. When your outdoor activities have to be extended into the evening, make sure your deck has enough lighting. Consider placing architectural lanterns on either side of your deck’s steps for added interest. If possible, install some sconce lighting on the side of your home. Complete the look by hanging string lights around the railings.
