Unpleasant odors coming from underneath the outdoor deck can put you and your family off from enjoying a beautiful day outdoors. Fortunately, many of these odors can be eliminated without tearing down your decking. In today’s post, the deck and soffit contractors at ExteriorPros share tips on how to eliminate these unpleasant odors.
The following are some of the most common causes of unpleasant odors from under the deck.
- Animals — Small wild animals tend to take shelter under enclosed spaces like the underside of decks, where they’d urinate and leave droppings under. They may end up trapped and die under the deck, the body of which would produce an odor that becomes stronger over time. Territorial animals such as dogs may urinate on the posts to mark it as theirs.
- Mold — Mold grows in warm and shaded places such as the underside of a deck. Sight unseen, it can spread under the deck and cause a telltale odor. The spores may also spread indoors and affect your home’s indoor air quality.
- Cigarettes — Carelessly discarded butts and ashes can produce a noticeable smell.
- Food particles — Food particles may end up under the deck. As food rots, it produces a noticeable odor that is more noticeable during warm months.
How to Get Rid of Unpleasant Odors
You will first need to determine the cause of the odor, which means you’ll have to get under the deck and find the cause. Fortunately, cleaning under the deck won’t require something as extreme as siding replacement. However, you have to be properly equipped for it. This means you have to wear gloves and a respirator, especially if you’re cleaning off mold or handling chemicals and animal remains.
Stains caused by animal droppings can be removed by spraying the surface with a solution made of equal parts white vinegar and water, then rinsing them after one hour. Mold can be removed with diluted bleach or off-the-shelf mold remover, however be careful not to get any on the decking material. Avoid using pressure washers on wood decking. Before buying any kind of cleaning product, ask your deck contractor if it’s safe to use.
